This ultra sonic outdoor bark control unit looks like any ordinary bird house that can hang on a tree, fence or anywhere outside. It detects barking from up to 50 feet away and has a 3 range setting. works only on certain dogs September 9, 2010

I've tried this thing on several dogs in the neighborhood. Luckily for me it works on the one I need it to most, my next door neighbor's German Shepard (which are notorious, loud barkers). After I turned this on (about 15-20ft away) the dog barked once, and looked stunned and annoyed, then gave another bark and walked away and sat down. Now he can't even look at my direction! This product really bothers him! I've been using intermittent varible conditioning in order to prevent the dog from getting used to it. This basically means, I randomly turn it on and off. This is the best way to extingish the barking (possibly forever). Otherwise, it might only work for a few weeks but then the dog will start barking again.
I only gave this 3 stars because I haven't found another dog in the neighborhood that responds to it. The other breeds I've tried are beagles, pitt bulls, and a few other yappy small dogs. I doubt this works on yappy dogs but I'm surpised the pitts weren't effected by it. I'm not sure why it doesn't seem to work on smaller dogs, perhaps they can't hear it or the microphone doesn't pick up higher pitched barks, but this is pretty consistent with the other reviews.
Anyway, I'm happy cuz it worked on the dog I needed it to work for and finally some silence.

I really hate to give this product a bad review, because we were so hopeful and excited for it to come so we could quiet our annoying neighbors dogs. We tried it in multiple locations around the dogs, from 30 feet away to right next to their dog pen. The dogs were not phased by it AT ALL! For the first couple hours, we thought it was working, but we were WRONG! They didn't care one bit, and acted like it wasn't even there. It was faced directly at them, with nothing blocking its way and it didn't stop them. We knew that it would take some time for them to learn not to bark, but after 2 weeks they were still going about their usual business - barking from 9 a.m. to sometimes midnight. I say two big thumbs down.
Item doesn't work September 7, 2010

This item made no difference whatsoever in the behavior of my dogs. They continued to bark regardless of where it was positioned in the yard and what level it was set to. My biggest "problem" is a basset hound and it didn't faze her a bit.

It works well for my dogs who were barking at the neighbors dog. I have two outdoor bark deterrents and would highly recommend them to others.
